A Security Risk Assessment is Mandatory for Your Practice or Organization!

October 10, 2013
7:00 AM – 8:30 AM

The Security Management Process standard in the HIPAA Security Rule requires organizations to implement policies and procedures to prevent, detect, contain, and correct security violations. (45 C.F.R. § 164.308(a)(1).) Risk analysis is one of four required implementation specifications that provide instructions to implement the Security Management Process standard. Section 164.308(a)(1)(ii)(A) states:

RISK ANALYSIS (Required).
Conduct an accurate and thorough assessment of the potential risks and vulnerabilities to the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of electronic protected health information held by the [organization].

In addition to an express requirement to conduct a risk analysis, the Rule indicates that risk analysis is a necessary tool in reaching substantial compliance with many other standards and implementation specifications. The Security Risk Analysis evaluates your practice’s compliance with the HIPAA Security Standards. Failure to complete the Security Risk Analysis can prevent you from collecting the EHR incentive and/or risk the EHR Incentive you do receive in the event of an audit.

Bryan Brothers, CEO of Brothers and Associates LLC, will speak to GLMS physicians and staff on the basics of performing a Security Risk Analysis in order to help physicians fully understand and take advantage of the full benefits of Electronic Health Records.
